What do you REALLY want from your business?

 Over the last few months, I've spoken a lot about strategy across social media, sharing bite size tips and tricks. Today, I wanted to strip it back to the most important question of all - What exactly do you want?

Before creating your business strategy, it’s important to know exactly what you want to achieve.  You've got to dig deep, think hard and get into the finer details. For example, you might want more sales. Let’s break that down:

  • Do you want more sales or do you want to increase your profits?
  • If you want more sales, what do you want more sales from? How many more sales?
  • If you really want to increase profits, what is exact figure you want to achieve? Now think about how you can achieve that figure?
  • What are all the different ways you could achieve that figure?
  •  

These are just some of the questions you should be asking yourself AHEAD of developing your strategy for the next 12-24-36 etc. months.

Questions will help you build your roadmap and decide on the best route forward. If you just scratch the surface, it’s easy to make different assumptions that often end up with you working a lot harder for a lot less.  In other words, you waste a ton of time, energy and money trying to reach the same destination.

By understanding and pinpointing the specifics, it is a lot easier to decide on the next step and the different actions necessary to achieve your goals.  You have the big picture and can plan your journey. At the same time, you are developing key performance indicators and critical success factors that will help you measure your performance and your success.

With that in mind, below is an action step you can take today to figure out exactly what you want:

Task for today:

Take a blank piece of paper and write down everything you want to achieve this year in your business. If you want, you can work this timescale around the business tax year. The list can be as long as you like.

Now take a look at each item on your list and on a separate piece of paper, write down why you want to achieve that?

At this point, you should see there are one or two clear goals that you REALLY want to achieve.  Circle them.

Now think about this:

  • What are the different routes you can take to achieving this goal?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking each route?
  • What route do you want to take to achieve each goal?

Quite often, as business owners, there are areas we would like to explore and although we think they are important, we put them on the back burner because we are too busy doing ‘stuff.’ This ‘stuff’ often isn’t as important and doesn’t fulfil our needs in the way we would like. It can lead us in the opposite direction, taking the long way round to achieving our goals. By doing a simple task like this frequently, we can stay focused and ahead of our game.
