Are you wondering whether you should automate Twitter direct messages? If so, this post is for you. I know your time is valuable so I'm going to get straight to the point on this one. No. You should never send automated direct messages on Twitter.
Of course, this is just my opinion but here's three reasons why I have such a strong view on this.
1. They are annoying
If you really want to convert customers, the last thing you want to send them an in your face sales message. A sales message that talks about how great you are or asks your new follower to do something that most of the time they can’t even reply to since you didn’t bother following them back or change your settings.
This is someone who has taken the step to allow you in their news feed and is interested in finding out more about you. That’s something to be grateful and appreciative for. Exploiting that trust by blasting an impersonal message at them is only going to repel that person, never attract them.
Psst… just because you insert |FNAME| or username in to make it appear real, you’re not fooling anyone.
2. You can’t automate relationships
People do business with other people they know, like and trust not with automated messages generated from a computer.
In this crazy world of technology, never underestimate the power of human connection. We seek it. We are on social media to be social.
Computers are wonderful at many things but they are not yet humans with emotions who engage and build real relationships.
When you send an auto-dm, it says, I don’t care enough about you to give time out of your day to build a relationship with the potentially your highest paying customer. Is that really the impression you want to be giving out? I think not.
3. It’s just plain rude.
Hey, now you’ve shown a tiny bit of interest in what I have to say, it’s time to buy my stuff. Here’s a link, buy here and follow me and do everything I ask you to do.
I mean....what? Welcome to crazy town.
If you’re like most people, you don’t like companies that try to push sales messages in your face. No consumer enjoys this, think about it from their perspective.
If you are serious about creating long-term success in your business, you have to start putting your customers first. That means taking the time to build a relationships and earning the right to promote your products/services. It means giving before you receive.
It means saying no to the auto-dms.
The bottom line is sending auto-dms isn’t social. It doesn’t do anything to build your brand or convert your community into paying customers. If you really want to grow a successful business utilising Twitter, you have to take the time to engage.
This is a network run on search discovery and conversations. If someone follows you, go check them out and start engaging in conversation they care about. Show you are just as interested in them and are in it for the long haul.
At the end of the day, you can spend all the time in the world running round in circles creating more and more noise OR you can put in the effort, plant the seeds and reap the rewards down the line through consistent, strategically implemented action.
