Hey there :)
I’m just sitting here drinking my first cup of the day…ahh, good ol’ coffee.
I'm thinking about the goals I've set myself this week. I’m specifically thinking about my social media goals as I start to ramp up my social media strategy again.
Have you thought about your social media goals and objectives lately?
It’s so easy to jump on social media, expect big results and then be sorely disappointed when nothing happens. A huge reason this happens is because people haven’t set S.M.A.R.T. objectives. I know it's one of those buzz phrases but that's because S.M.A.R.T objectives work.
If you don’t know where you are going, how are you ever going to get there?
You need to be able to set S.M.A.R.T objectives for any given social media platform. More importantly, those objectives need to tie into your overall business model and strategy. They need to integrate.
So let’s take a look at what I’m talking about:
Do you know exactly what you want to achieve on a given social media platform? This is important. Every platform is different so to understand how to best utilise the platform, you’re going to need to know exactly what you want to get out of it.
One of the biggest questions we hear in social media is ‘what’s the ROI?’ The only way to calculate the real return on investment is to measure it. Therefore it goes without saying that your goals and objectives need to be measurable. When I say measurable, I mean in a way that can tie to your big vision and what you’re trying to achieve in your business.
It’s great to set big goals but if you do that when it comes to social media and you don’t reach them, it can be a little deflating. By the same token, you want to challenge yourself to achieve the best you can so make sure you set realistic, attainable goals.
You know I’m going to pick on the ‘like’ count right? Likes do not equal sales. Make sure that you choose goals and objectives that are relevant to your business and what you are trying to achieve. For example, sales is relevant. Email subscribers are relevant. When you’re marketing on Facebook, your marketing on rented land. Your email list is something you own and offers direct communication to your audience.
We can all dream of ‘one day’. One day never comes, only today. That’s why you do want to keep yourself accountable, focused and productive by seeing yourself deadlines for achieving your goals. Not only will this increase your likelihood of making them happen if you don’t quite make it then you are able to sit down and logically think about why. After all, when you know better, you do better.
When you set S.M.A.R.T. objectives, a plan of action starts to form. You start making strategic, intentional decisions that lead you to where you want to go.
So go ahead, give them a go. In fact, when you do, come back and leave a comment to let me know how you get on. I'd love to hear from you.
Have a beautiful day.
